First quarter of 2025: Julie continues to make good progress following her
hip replacement. She still needs to take it easy - no big walks or bike rides
- and she has just returned to work. We’ve known about the Rumbling Bridge walk for many years, but given its
shortness (only 3-miles) we’ve not done it. However, 3-miles is just about
right for Julie in her current state of recovery. And what a 3-miles it is:
we can’t recommend it enough! Just over half a mile from the
start you pass the header for the Rumbling Bridge Community Hydroelectric
Scheme; completed in 2016 it can generate up to 500kW of power for the local community. A well maintained track leads
you along the River Devon Through some lovely woodland |

The
start of the gorge is rather sudden; the river drops into a deep cleft The
gorge and its surrounding woodland is delightful The
gorge twists and turns revealing beautiful pools Well-constructed
platforms afford views from the middle of the gorge |

We finally reach the Rumbling Bridge itself. Two bridges in fact: the
lower bridge, built in 1713. A little more than 100-years later, in 1816, the second, higher bridge
was constructed giving level access to the bridge rather than the steep
decent/accent to the older bridge. If you’re in the area, with a couple of hours spare, you’d be
hard-pressed to find a more entertaining walk! |
